A Period Film from Demirkubuz: ‘Kıskanmak’ / ‘Envy.’
Zeki Demirkbuz, the director of notable films, such as ‘Masumiyet / ‘Innocence,’ ‘Kader / Destiny,’ and ‘İtiraf / Confession,’ will present his first period film, ‘Kiskanmak / Envy’ to the audiences in the Fall.
‘Envy,’ starring Serhat Tutumluer, Berrak Tuzunatac and Nergis Ozturk, is based on Nahit Sirri Orik’s 1956 novel of the same title.
‘Envy,’ takes place in Zonguldak in the 1930s and explores the feelings of envy of a woman who perceives herself as ugly.
In Demirkubuz’s first period film, Nergis Ozturk is cast as the ‘ugly’ woman and Berrak Tuzuntac plays the part of the beautiful woman Seniha is envious of.
Being Ugly
In an interview previously given to NTV, Demirkubuz mentioned that he had been touched by the concept of ugliness: “I thought a lot about what it means to be ugly. I tried to understand how beauty is seen from the point of view of the ugly. I really gave it a lot of time and effort. I was very curious about what would be going on in the world of a person, or an ugly woman whom we’d never notice, would never pay any attention to and what tragedies she may cause if given the opportunity. When I decided to shoot the novel, I forgot about everything else and totally concentrated on this.”
Demirkubuz, who is one of the most important directors of recent Turkish cinema previously made several notable films, such as ‘Masumiyet / Innocence,’ ‘3. Sayfa / The Third Page,’ ‘Yazgı / Fate,’ ‘İtiraf / Confession’ and ‘Kader / Destiny.’
